Evidence, sourced and checkable

The case for Jesus

Why Jesus, and only Jesus: the evidence from history, His own claims, the resurrection, the manuscripts, prophecy, archaeology, cosmology and conscience. Each reason states the claim, the evidence and its sources, the strongest objection, and where scholars disagree.

Jesus is a figure of history, not legend

Roman and Jewish writers who had no reason to favour Christians mention Jesus, His execution under Pontius Pilate and the movement that followed Him. Almost no historian today doubts that He lived.

No other founder claimed what Jesus claimed

Jesus did not claim to be one teacher among many. He forgave sins, took the divine name, said He would judge the world and said no one comes to the Father except through Him. Claims like that are either true or disqualifying.

He died, and His followers said so from the start

Jesus' death by crucifixion is among the best-attested facts of ancient history. Within a few years His followers were already reciting a short creed: He died for our sins, was buried and was raised on the third day.

The tomb was empty: evidence for the resurrection

Jesus was buried in a known tomb in Jerusalem, and the first people to find it empty were women, whose testimony counted for little in that culture. Even the earliest counter-story admitted the body was gone.

They saw Him risen, and it changed everything

Individuals and groups were convinced they had met the risen Jesus. Frightened men who had fled at His arrest became bold witnesses who would not stop preaching it, even under threat of death.

Two sceptics changed sides

James, the brother of Jesus, did not believe in Him during His ministry. Saul of Tarsus persecuted the church. Both became leaders of the movement after, they said, the risen Jesus appeared to them.

The Gospels are rooted in eyewitness testimony

The Gospels read like ancient biographies, full of names, places and awkward details. Their writers say they drew on eyewitnesses, and the earliest testimony about Mark's Gospel connects it to Peter.

We can know what the New Testament first said

The New Testament survives in more Greek manuscripts, from closer to its writing, than any other ancient book. Textual critics can compare them and recover the original wording with great confidence.

The Messiah was described centuries before

The Hebrew Scriptures, written long before Jesus, speak of a servant who would suffer for the sins of others, a ruler from Bethlehem and a pierced one. The Dead Sea Scrolls prove these texts are older than Jesus.

Archaeology keeps confirming the setting

Stones and inscriptions found in the ground name people and places the Bible mentions: Pontius Pilate, the high priest Caiaphas, the Pool of Siloam and the house of David.

The universe had a beginning

Whatever begins to exist has a cause. The evidence of modern cosmology points to the universe having a beginning, which points beyond the universe to a cause that is timeless, immensely powerful and personal.

A universe tuned for life

Physicists of many beliefs point out that several constants and starting conditions of the universe sit within narrow ranges that permit life. The tuning is better explained by design than by chance.

Right and wrong are real

Almost everyone knows that some things, like torturing a child for fun, are truly wrong, not just unfashionable. Real moral obligations point to a moral lawgiver, and the Bible says that law is written on the human heart.
